Marvin Victor
Toivonen
February 19, 1925 – February 6, 2023
Ishpeming- Marvin V. Toivonen, age 97, went to be with his Lord on February 6, 2023 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving care of his family, and nursing home staff.
Marvin was born in Republic, MI on February 19, 1925, son of the late Aili (Tuomi) and Victor Toivonen. He later moved to Ishpeming, MI until the age of 10 when his family moved back to Republic. Marvin graduated from Republic High School in 1943 after which he joined the United States Army serving in the ETO in England, France, and Germany with the 733 rd Railroad Operating Battalion during World War II. After returning home he was employed at the Republic Co-op. He started to work for Cleveland Cliffs in 1947 with the Diamond Drilling Department. Marvin married the love of his life in October of 1949 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee. In 1959 he and his family moved to Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa where he was employed as a supervisor on the Diamond Drills for Republic Steel Corp. The family returned home in 1966 where he worked again for Cleveland Cliffs until he retired in 1983. In 1985 he began working for Callahan Mining Co. in their lab. He retired from there in 1987. In 1978 he moved to Petticoat Lake where he and his wife lived until they moved back to Ishpeming in 1998. Marvin loved his wood cutting, dancing, fishing, hunting, and did some beautiful wood carvings.
Marvin was a lifetime member of the Ishpeming V.F.W. and a more recent member of the Ishpeming American Legion. He enjoyed being a member of the Tri-City Carvers, Ishpeming cribbage group at the Ishpeming High Rise and the Twin City Cribbage group in Negaunee.
Marvin is survived by 2 children- Kathy (Robert) Waters, Dale (Mary Ellen) Toivonen, 4 grandchildren- Chris (Karen) Salo, Pamela (Dan) Pohlman, Rachel (Todd) Collins, Michael (Ginger Pittman) Toivonen, 5 great grandchildren- Gavin and Griffin Argall, Aili and Alex Toivonen, and Tyler Quayle along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife of 63 years- Pauline (Salson) Toivonen, infant son- Robert Dale Toivonen, 4 brothers- Arnold, Richard, Neal, and Donald Toivonen.
Following Marvin's wishes, private graveside services with military honors will be held in the spring.
