Ishpeming – Martha E. "Penny" Ulrickson, age 90, former North Lake resident, passed away Tuesday April 27, 2010 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where she had resided since Oct. of 2007.


Martha was born November 21, 1919 in the Boston Location of the Copper Country the daughter of the late Elias & Hattie (Pyykkonen) Pennala. She moved to North Lake as an infant, and had resided there most of her life. Martha was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1937. She married the late George Ulrickson and together they raised 4 children. As her children became older, Martha worked as a cook's helper at the North Lake School for several years. In retirement, she and George enjoyed time spent in Florida during the winter months.


Martha was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, along with the Martha Circle of the WELCA. She was also a member of the Ishpeming VFW auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and picking blueberries. Martha loved to be around family and friends, and could always be counted upon to lend a helping hand to someone in need.


Survivors include a daughter Elizabeth (Neil) Carman of Austin, TX, 3 sons – George (Nancy) Ulrickson of New Port Richey, FL, David Ulrickson of Algonquin, IL, and Brian (Anita) Ulrickson of North Lake, a sister Viola (Kenneth) Williams of Ishpeming, 2 sisters-in-law – Evelyn Nadeau and Barbara Pennala both of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren – Briana (Marc) Olson, April Ulrickson(Ben Foster), Kyle Ulrickson and Molly Ulrickson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her husband George Ulrickson in 1988, a sister and brother-in-law - Eleanor and Paul Bennett, a brother Norman Pennala, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law - Marvin Nadeau, William and Margaret Ulrickson.


The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday April 29, 2010 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming from 10:00am until 12:00noon. Funeral services will follow at 12:00noon with the Rev. Warren Geier to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Mark Ulrickson, Robert Nadeau, Gary Pennala & Gary Dalton.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Memorial Fund at the Bethany Lutheran Church or the Activities Fund at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Martha's memory.
