Republic- Marion L. (Alexander) Salo, 72 of 13800 River Rd, Republic, passed away Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
She was born April 18, 1937 in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of John L. and Ruth (Perkins) Alexander.
She graduated from East Grand Rapids High School in 1955 and from Colorado Woman's College (now Denver University) in 1957.
Marion married Kenneth W. Salo at Park Church, Grand Rapids on February 13, 1960 and moved with Ken through his 24-year naval career, residing in Puerto Rico, Virginia, Rhode Island, Florida, Maine, Alaska (Adak, in the Aleutian Islands), Maryland and Germany.
Marion was a person of quiet dignity and demeanor, quietly supporting various groups including the Republic Area Historical Society, St Vincent de Paul, the Republic Lions Club and St Augustine's Church pasty sales. She was also an active member of the "Towanda Club", an informal group of lady friends for their semi-annual gatherings.
Marion enjoyed bowling and going to the casino, but most of all enjoyed the love and company of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Ken of Republic, by her children and grandchildren: Edward, wife Karla, (Kathryne and Carl) of Mandeville, LA, Kevin, wife Christi, of Munising (Tessa, Connor & Trevor), Katrina of Grand Rapids, MI, and Lt Col Craig Salo US Army, wife Annemarie, of Columbus, OH (John, Mathew, Kathleen, Michael and William). She is also survived by her mother, Ruth Alexander of Grand Rapids, and her brother Donald, wife Bobbi, of East Grand Rapids, MI. She was preceded in death by her father in 1984.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming at 2:30 p.m. The Reverend Ardy Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28, and from 12:30 until the time of service on Tuesday.
A luncheon will be held at the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge immediatly following the service.
