Ishpeming – Mamie A. Anderson, age 91, longtime Ishpeming resident died peacefully on Wednesday December 13, 2017 at the UP Health System Marquette.
Mamie was born to Uno and Martha (Pari) Hakala on March 23, 1926 on a farm in Iron River, MI. In 1956 she moved to Ishpeming. Also in 1956 her love for God moved her to dedicate her to him and to symbolize this by water baptism. In 1958 she married to Chester Anderson and together they raised their beloved son Jerome.
Mamie had a love for all creatures great and small and never wanted to harm anything. When she could still see well, one of her favorite pastimes was writing poems for the people she loved. When she could not see well anymore she made up rhymes to make one laugh. Her love of language and words prompted her to read the dictionary often and learn new words. It is a good thing telephone party lines became a thing of the past because Mamie loved to talk on the phone, even to telemarketers, often having conversations with them about her faith. Toward the end of her life she would entertain the workers at the nursing facility where she stayed with her dances down the hallways, using her walker.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Jerome and Toni Anderson of Ishpeming, sister Lillian (Duane) Danielson of Ishpeming, sister-in-law Gloria Hakala of Lake Odessa, MI along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mamie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Mary Hill and brother Walfred Hakala.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 1:00pm – 2:00pm on Sunday December 17, 2017 at the Ishpeming Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Wtnesses where a memorial service will follow at 2:00pm on Sunday with John Silva presiding. Coffee and social time will follow the service at the Tilden Twp. Hall.
Mamie will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
