Ishpeming- Lowell K. Smail age 89 of 100 Marble St. Ishpeming, passed away while under the loving care of his family & UP Home Health & Hospice on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he has been a resident since Jan 13, 2012,
Lowell was born January 21, 1923 in Negaunee to William C. and Clara Ann (Penhale) Smail. Lowell served his country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II serving in the China, Burma, India Theatre. Lowell worked 36 years for CCI Mining Company as a diesel mechanic. He worked at the Mather and Republic Mines and retired in 1985 from the Empire Mine.
Lowell was a member of the Ishpeming Rock & Mineral Club and former member of the Ishpeming Lions Club and Grace Episcopal Church of Ishpeming. He enjoyed bow hunting, gardening, bird watching or just spending time in the outdoors. Lowell was a hard worker and was proud that he built his own house and camp.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Dawne B. (Tippett) Smail, whom he married November 25, 1942; two daughters: Roxie (John) Walker of Switzerland and Melody (John) Visser of St. Louis, MO; two sisters: Marge Hodgins of Kingsford and Carol Trudell of Negaunee; two grandsons: Miles (Jeannie) Anderson and Jared Anderson; two great grandchildren: Maya Anderson and Evan L. Anderson; sister in law Irene Vicary; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services for Lowell will be held 11:00AM Monday, February 13th at Grace Episcopal Church, Ishpeming, with Richard Graybill officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday at the church from 10:00AM until the time of service at 11:00AM.
Pallbearers will be John Visser, Miles Anderson, Jared Anderson and Richard Trudell.
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 will conduct Military Honors at the conclusion of the funeral ceremony.
