Obituary

Humboldt, MI - Lorraine D. Palmer, age 90, longtime Humboldt resident, passed away on Friday, August 13, 2021, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where she had resided since September of 2020.

Lorraine was born in Humboldt, MI on October 1, 1930, a daughter of the late Helen (Ulvinen) and Toivo Huotari. Lorraine grew up in Humboldt. The family home had no plumbing nor electricity until 1948. Lorraine was a graduate of Champion High School, Class of 1948. She went on to attend Suomi College graduating in 1968, and began working at Michigan Tech. While working for Michigan Technological University, she also attended business school, and received a bachelor's degree in 1974. Lorraine worked in the administration at MTU as an Education Coordinator for many years retiring in 1984. Lorraine also worked for Michigan Bell in Ishpeming as an operator in her younger years, where she had met her future husband Jack Palmer who was working as a police officer. She was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.

Lorraine volunteered for a number of organizations both locally and statewide, many of these serving as an advocate for people with disabilities. She was a devoted fan to anything her family was doing, but especially hockey, where she could be heard "helping" the officials. Her home was a port in the storm for anyone who was traveling by. Coffee time and "sweets" were a daily event. Mom loved reunions and family and organized many events.

Lorraine is survived by four sons - Dave (Phyllis) Palmer of Marquette; Joe (Cheryl) Palmer of Mesa, AZ; Tom (Holly) Palmer of De Pere, WI; Michael Palmer of Marquette; a daughter Carol (Terry) Clouthier of Lake Linden; three sisters - Ruth Pietila; Marilyn (Dan) Rintamaki; Jean Wikman; three brothers - Lloyd (Vivian) Huotari, Wendall (Ginny) Huotari, Kenneth (Sandra) Huotari; sister-in-law Arlene Huotari; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Lorraine was preceded in death by an infant son Gordon Duane Palmer, her husband Jack H. Palmer, her brother Ron Huotari, and brothers-in-law -Art Pietila and Duane Wikman.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00 – 11:00 AM on Friday August 20, 2021 at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church, 1700 US Hwy 41 West in Ishpeming Twp. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM on Friday with Roger Kangas officiating. Interment will take place at the Humboldt Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Karl Palmer, Greg Clouthier, Bryan Argall, Walter Moore, James Volek and Shane Spencer.
