Ishpeming Lois Ann Mattson Hebert of County Road 496 in Ishpeming passed away on Saturday November 13, 2010. The daughter of the late Ted and Ann (Lampi) Mattson, Lois was a graduate of Ishpeming High School and earned her BA and MA degrees at NMU.
She retired after many years of teaching in the NICE School District and felt extremely honored to have been selected as the Distinguished Retiree during the 2005 Homecoming.
In her leisure time Lois enjoyed reading and being involved in her grandchildren's activities Another favorite was to host or attend "Barnum Girls" reunions when childhood friends would reconnect for an evening of laughter and tears. Many wonderful memories were of time spent in Lake Havasu, Arizona. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Lois is survived by her loving husband, Allen. They married in 1968. Other family includes her two daughters of whom she was most proud, Vanessa (Kurt) Taavola of Negaunee and LeAnn (Jeff) Saarela of Ishpeming, three beloved granddaughters Kylee, Skylar, and Alexxus Taavola of Negaunee, and two wonderful grandsons, Brayden and Jeffrey Saarela of Ishpeming, a brother Ted (Ruth) Mattson of Negaunee, a niece, Mellissa (Michael) Pischel of Perronville, and nephews Greg (Tina) Trowbridge of Kiva and Ted (Trina) Mattson III of Dallas, as well as former sister in law Carolyn Mattson of Trenary , a brother in law, Richard (Roberta) Hebert and several cousins.
The family will greet friends from 3:00-5:00PM on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at Christ the King Lutheran Church with services at 5:00PM with Rev. Tim Ott officiating.
Honorary Pallbearers will be special friends who offered support and compassion without questioning. It is fitting they should follow Lois on this part of her final journey whether in body or in spirit-- Genevieve Nap, Julie Herman, and Mary Lou Maki, of Ishpeming, Sheila Richards of Marquette, Jean Jandron of Negaunee, and Sharon Hiller of Appleton.
Others whose kindness was deeply appreciated are Roger Herman, Mike and Mary Nelson, and Jean Junak as well as Lois's "Hug Club", Gerry Kippola, Bob Anttila, Gary Anderson, Lloyd Hooper, Ron Smetana, John Matthews and Ed Niemi.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial to the family to be used for a scholarship to be established at Westwood High School.
