National Mine – Lloyd G. Cox, age 91, former National Mine resident, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had resided for the past year.

Lloyd was born February 26, 1925 in Ishpeming, MI the son of the late George and Lydia (Fredrickson) Cox. Lloyd grew up in National Mine and lost his father at age 13. He began working, first at Pracey's Gas Station and later at the Hercules Powder Mill following the loss of his father. Lloyd was a proud graduate of the National Mine High School, Class of 1942. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Remey as a sonarman in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Lloyd returned to this area following his service to his country. He had worked as a policeman for the Ishpeming Police Dept. and a route carrier for the United States Postal Service in Ishpeming. Lloyd married Helen C. Larson in October of 1947 and together they had 4 children. He went on to work for 25 years with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., first at Eagle Mills then the Republic Mine and retired from the Tilden Mine as a production supervisor in the yearly 1980's. Lloyd also served as Tilden Township Supervisor for several years as well as Chairman of the 50 th Year Reunion of the National Mine High School.

Lloyd was never one afraid to work and following his "retirement" he continued working as a security officer at the E.L.F project, as a carpenter and as a rural route carrier to name a few. He was a former member of the Negaunee Eagles Club, the Ishpeming Elks Club and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) where he was past commander. Lloyd was a "Jack of All Trades" and will be remembered for his love of old cars, anything that was shiny, his watches and clocks, a good story that he could tell, and reading the daily news. He loved to go dancing, along with meeting and helping out people who may have been less fortunate. Lloyd had wintered in Punta Gorda, FL for 19 years during his retirement. Lloyd was most proud of his children and their dedication to hard work that he had instilled in them.
