Lily was born in Lake Linden, MI on December 15, 1918, the daughter of the late Peter August and Lydia (Oja) Hivala. After graduation from Dollar Bay High School, she attended Suomi College, where she was the valedictorian of her class, and Hamline University. In 1942 she graduated from what is now Northern Michigan University. Her first teaching job was teaching high school English in Richmond, MI. After her retirement, Lily and her husband, Arnold, enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Rockport, TX. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.

Lily was a leader in many ways. She was deeply interested in the teaching of reading and helped organize many reading-related events. The preservation of the natural environment was of great importance to her. Lily was active in numerous groups and organizations.
