Republic- Lester C. Hooper, age 91 longtime Republic resident, passed away Tuesday, February 03, 2009 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where he been a resident since January 9, 2009.
Lester was born in Republic, Michigan on November 19, 1917, the son of the late Charles and Annie (Chard) Hooper. He was a graduate of Republic High School and attended business school at Cleary College in Ypsilanti, MI. He married the love of life, Lois Peterson, in 1941 in Iowa at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. Lester faithfully served in the U.S. Army Air Corp, with the 814th Bomber Squadron during WW II overseas in England, being honorably discharged on September 20, 1945.
He worked as the owner in the family auto business, in which his father Charlie started and was in the family for 76 years, first in Republic at Hooper Motors which later became Hooper-Stanaway Ford in Ishpeming Twp. before retiring in 2001. He also worked in Lansing, Mount Pleasant, and Grand Rapids with Capital Business Services in Accounting. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Witch Lake and served on the Board of Directors for the Miners First National Bank in Ishpeming. Les had also served as a member of the Board of Trustees at the Bell Memorial Hospital, past director of the Ishpeming Area Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Marquette Co. Ins. Association. Since 1979, Lester and his wife Lois spent their winters in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Lester is survived by his wife Lois Hooper of Republic, 2 children: Nathalie Hooper of Lansing and Pamela Abbott of MA, 3 grandchildren: Matt (Beth) Osterhaven, Brittney Abbott and Tucker Abbott. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters and 3 brothers.
Funeral Services will be held at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Friday February 6, 2009 at 2:00pm with the Rev. Randy Reed officiating. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 will hold Military Honors following the services. Interment will be at the Deepdale Memorial Park in Delta Twp., MI.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00noon until 2:00pm on Friday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
