Obituary

Ishpeming Township - Leonard Matt Lampi, age 94 longtime Ishpeming Township resident, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2012 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veteran in Marquette where he had been a resident since 2005.

Leonard was born November 16, 1917 in Ishpeming to Matt and Signe (Tolonen) Lampi. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWll. Leonard worked countless jobs in his lifetime. He worked 10 years at Yellowstone National Park, working on the "Mission 66" project, ordered by Congress to preserve "in such a manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." He also worked 10 years at the McCormick Wilderness Tract, at the Tracy Mine, and retired from the K.I. Sawyer water treatment plant, S.P.

Leonard was a member of the VFW and Greenwood American Legion. During his free time he rambled the woodlands, wearing out countless canines. He was the ultimate outdoorsman. Leonard was known for "Len-Wood" art; creating items made out of materials most folks would disgard.

Leonard is survived by his special son, Rodney (Rowt) Lampi, a daughter and best friend, Kathy Jo Lampi (Steve & Alannah Arseneault),two grandsons, Brent (Sharon) of Phoenix, Az., Michael (Sherri Sargent) of New York, two great-grandchildren, Parker and Hudson, along with nieces and nephews, and his dog Annie. Leonard was preceded in death by his wife Bertha, brothers Ludwig and Clement, a sister Irene Ranta, and a step-son Michael Roberts.

A memorial service will be held at 5pm Tuesday, February 7th at the Bjork and Zhulkie funeral home with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home at 4pm until the time of service at 5pm.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter380 will conduct military honors at the conclusion of the memorial service.
