National Mine- Leon A Korte, age 70 of 570 Co Rd PCC, National Mine (Ishpeming), passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 01, 2007 with his family at his side following a 4 year illness.
Leon was born November 21, 1936 in Negaunee to the late Arthur J. & Nellie (Augustson) Korte. Leon graduated from Negaunee High School, class of 1955 and served in the U.S. Army following the Korean Conflict.
Leon worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the Marquette County Sheriff's Department for 23 years, retiring in 1992.
Leon was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church. He was an avid bowler, he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and watching them in their activities. Leon enjoyed hunting and fishing, riding in the woods counting deer, while listening to Detroit Tiger baseball on the radio.
Leon is survived by his wife, whom he married October 29, 1960, Laura (Potila) Korte, 2 daughters: Lisa (Clark) Hosie of Crystal Falls, and Diana (Kurt) Waters of Negaunee, 5 grandchildren: Christopher, Andrew and Philip (Megan) LaCosse, Nathan and Tara Waters, a sister Lauren Korte of Grand Rapids, MI and a brother Norman Duane (Carol) Korte of Wallace, MI, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 6:00p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at the Faith Lutheran Church Co. Rd. 581 Ishpeming, with Rev Virginia Eggert officiating.
Friends may call at Faith Lutheran Church on Tuesday from 4:00p.m.-6:00p.m.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Marquette County Sheriff's Department
