Obituary

Ishpeming- Leo L. Sundberg, age 84 of 206 N. Third St. Ishpeming, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had been a resident since September 2005.

Leo was born July 25, 1923 in Ishpeming to Ernest & Rose (Pidgeon) Sundberg. He graduated from the Ishpeming High School and served his country in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, enlisting February 19, 1943. He served with the 24th Bomb Squadron, 6th Bomb Group, 313th Wing as a radio operator on B-29's and took part in the Air Offensive Japan – Eastern Mandates stationed on Tinian Island, part of the northern Mariana Islands in the western South Pacific. Leo received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal and was honorably discharged February 23, 1946.

Leo worked in the laboratory, as a geological technician and a foreman for Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company for over 30 years and worked an additional 18 years for Sundberg & Carlson Associates. Leo was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church where he belonged to the Choir, the Funeral Choir, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus Fr. Vincent Ouellette Council and Bishop Baraga the Snowshoe Priest Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Leo also belonged to the VASA Lodge, Ishpeming Elks Lodge, Dead River Campers Association and the Ishpeming V.F.W Post #4573. Leo was a master wine maker and a wonderful chef, who was famous for his spaghetti and meatballs and twice baked potatoes. Leo enjoyed time spent with family and friends at his beloved camp on the Little Dead River Basin and his hunting camp south of Ishpeming, "Camp Hope", which he belonged to for over 60 years. Leo also was an avid ski jumper in his youth who jumped Suicide Hill.

Leo is survived by his wife, whom he married June 19, 1948, Charlotte (LaFreniere) Sundberg of Ishpeming, 4 children: Darryll (Susie) Sundberg of Ishpeming, Scott (Barbara) Sundberg of Mission, TX, Susan (David) Swanson of Littleton, CO and James (Lee Anne) Sundberg of Ishpeming, 11 grandchildren: Lindsay, Ryan & Derek Sundberg, Brandon (Teresa) Sundberg, Gena (Mark) Johnson, Teal, Michael, Anna and Connor Swanson, Joslyn and Jennifer Sundberg, 7 great grandchildren along with nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: Roger & Paul Sundberg and a sister Phyllis Anderson.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 12:00 noon Monday, April 28, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. James Challancin and Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate. Inurnment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.

Friends may call at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Monday from 10:00am-12:00noon.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus- Bishop Baraga Snowshoe Priest Assembly.

Memorial considerations may be directed to the Knights of Columbus- Fr. Vincent Ouellette Council or St. Joseph Catholic Church in memory of Leo.

The family would like to thank the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans for the excellent cares of Drs. Huron and Dr. Carlyn. I can't thank everybody individually, because I will forget somebody. Keep the plants watered. Charlotte & Family.
