Obituary

Negaunee – Lawrence "Fudd" Mattson, age 89, longtime resident of 125 Mattson Road, Negaunee passed away on Monday, March 2, 2020 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had resided for the past 5 months.

Lawrence was born in Negaunee on June 6, 1930, son of the late Ellen (Koski) and Jalmer Mattson. He grew up in Negaunee and was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1948. Following high school "Fudd" bought a dump truck with money he borrowed from his parents and did road construction projects in the local area.  He then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1950-1954 during the Korean War period. Lawrence returned to this area following his honorable discharge and married the former Kay Jacobson in the summer of 1955. At this time, he was employed by the Mattson Dairy as a milkman.  Fudd went on to work for Jones and Laughlin Co. at the Tracy Mine for 17 years and did masonry work on the side. He then became a Wausau Homes dealer (Lakeland Construction) and worked in the housing business for 40 years. Fudd saw humor in everything and loved to make people laugh. He enjoyed spending his time cutting firewood and was a member of Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Kay A. Mattson of Negaunee; a daughter Suzanne (Matthew) Hepokoski of Grand Rapids, MN; two sons, Stuart Mattson of Tangier, Morocco and Mark Mattson of Negaunee; three sisters, Shirley (Ted) Kero, of Negaunee, Julie (Donald) Johnson, of Marquette and Margie Isaacs of Hibbing, MN; sister-in-law Anna Mattson of Negaunee; 3 grandchildren, Adam, Mark (Rachel) and Joel Hepokoski; 2 great grandchildren, Braden and Lauren Mattson; along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of brothers and sisters in faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister - Mildred (Uuno) Ropponen; brothers, Richard and Donald Mattson; brothers-in-law, James Jylha and Ernie Isaacs; and a grandson Ryan Mattson.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 1:00pm on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, Co Rd 492, Negaunee.  Funeral services will follow at 1:00PM on Saturday at the Church with Dale Kemp to officiate.  Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
