The Reverend Lance J. Roberts,
age 65, of 212 Shoreline Drive, Negaunee, died at his home on Sunday, June 24, 2007. He was born May 17, 1942, in Ishpeming to Earl and Joann (Aho) Roberts. Lance grew up in Barnum Location and was a graduate of Ishpeming High School, class of 1960.
Lance was a graduate of Suomi College, Hancock, in 1962, and Northern Michigan University, Marquette, in 1964. He received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from The Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago in 1968.
Rev. Roberts served in parish ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stambaugh, and Bethany Lutheran Church, Amasa, from 1968 to 1972. He then became pastor of Holy Nativity Lutheran Church, Kenosha, WI, from 1972 to 1978. He served Christ the King Lutheran Church, Escanaba, from 1978 to 1986, First Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain, from 1986 to 1995, and Bethany Lutheran Church, Republic, from 1995 until his retirement from active ministry in 2001. Lance was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming, which was his home congregation. Lance and Marlys (Ojala) Roberts were married at First Lutheran Church, Ewen, in 1963.
Survivors include his wife Marlys, daughters Beth Roberts (Drew Starenko), Meredith Roberts (Dag Juhlin), and a son Jay Roberts (Sue Spaulding). Lance and Marlys's grandchildren are Rosalie and Ivan Starenko, and Sophie and Kai Juhlin. Lance is further survived by his father, Earl Roberts, a sister Mary (Neil) Rundman, and a brother Kevin (Laura) Roberts, all of Ishpeming. He was preceded in death by his mother Joann Roberts and his brother Dale Roberts.
A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2007. Officiating clergy will be Bishop Thomas A. Skrenes, Rev. Lauri O. Maki, Rev. Thomas Wickstrom and Rev. Rudolph Kemppainen.
The family will receive friends at Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, and again from 12:00 noon until the time of the service on Friday.
