Obituary

Diorite Loc., MI – Kenneth "Keno" Jaykka, age 90, lifelong area resident, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee, while in the loving care of his family, and nursing home staff.

Keno was born on January 15, 1933 in Detroit, son of the late Ellen Keski and Clifford DeChambeau. He grew up in Michigamme and graduated from Michigamme High School, class of 1951. Following graduation Keno served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955 during the Korean War. When he received his honorable discharge, he returned home to the UP where he worked at various Iron Ore Mining jobs, as well as security for Cliffs and in retirement he enjoyed working maintenance for Ely Township.

Keno and his wife were some of the first members of Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church. He always kept his faith, and church was very important to him. Keno enjoyed golfing, blueberry picking, riding his four-wheeler, going to camp, and was an avid Tigers and Lions fan. He will be fondly remembered as a family man, cherishing following his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids events. Keno loved to make pancakes and would often schedule a day for his entire family to come over to enjoy.

Keno is survived by 3 children- David (Nancy) Jaykka of West Ishpeming, Diane (Guy) Murray of Diorite Loc., Carolyn (Jim) Trewnick of Diorite Loc., 8 grandchildren- Matthew Jaykka, Ryan (Danielle) Jaykka, Heidi Jaykka, Kristin Murray, Keri (Jason) Hytinen, Daniel (Katherine) Murray, Eric (Rebeca) Trewnick, Corey Trewnick, 10 great grandchildren- Landyn, Zakary, and Lucy Jaykka, Lexi and Allison Gerine Hytinen, Myla Skauge, Lydia, Grace, and Violet Murray, and Faith Trewnick, along with his special cousin- Sylvia Mikkola. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years- Gerine Jaykka, mother- Ellen Keski, grandmother- Jennie Jaykka, aunt- Tye Jaykka, special cousin- Mary Hughes, 7 siblings- Shirley Tchida, Janet Stebbins, Barbara Burgess, Keith Keski, Gordon Keski, Steve Keski, and Robert Keski.

Keno's family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 12:00pm on Friday August 18, 2023 at the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church, 795 North Lake Dr. Ishpeming, MI 49849. A memorial service will follow at 12:00pm with Rev. Steve Jensen to officiate. Military honors will be accorded at the conclusion of the service by the UP Honor Team. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Keno's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Eastwood Nursing Center for all the love, care, and compassion they gave to both Keno and Gerine while they resided there.
