Obituary

Ishpeming Twp. – Kenneth R. "Ken" Stanaway, age 58 of #49 Sunnyside Estates, Ishpeming Twp. passed away on Wednesday December 26, 2007 at his home, following a seven year illness.


Ken was born October 30, 1949 in Negaunee the son of Mervyn and Ruth (Hautamaki) Stanaway. He attended the Negaunee Public Schools, and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps, as a Lance Cpl. in Vietnam. Stanaway was awarded with the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat "V" for distinguishing himself under fire during action in Vietnam. Ken returned to this area following his tour of duty in Vietnam, working for many years at Stan's Auto and Towing as a mechanic and tow truck driver, retiring due to his illness in 2001.


"Once a Marine Always a Marine" was a motto Ken lived by. He was a member of the VA Romo VFW Post 3165 of Negaunee. He enjoyed stock car racing locally at Thunder Valley and Norway, and also stayed in touch with NASCAR. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan and enjoyed the many happy weekends at the Helen Lake Camp.


Survivors include his wife Linda Stanaway of Ishpeming; his father Merv Stanaway of Negaunee; a daughter – Carrie Ann (Thia) Hoffman of Oklahoma, OK, and her children – Courtney, Kyle, Caleb and Kayden all of Oklahoma City, OK; 5 Brothers – Mervyn "Butch" Stanaway of Negaunee, Donald (Rose) Stanaway of Ishpeming, David Stanaway of Green Bay, WI, Ray (Shelly) Stanaway of Negaunee, and Brian (Kerri) Stanaway of Ishpeming; a sister – Patti Seppala of Ishpeming; 2 sons James (Angel) Cox of Ishpeming and Billy Jo Cox and his fiancee Kelly Stone of Ishpeming; a daughter Mona Reynard (Drew) Gordon of Rugby, England; grandchildren – Tasha Jo, Melody, Lacy, Desirae, Andy, Matthew, Madison, James and Maverick; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, a son Dean Helmila, a brother-in-law Matti Seppala and an infant granddaughter Lorissa Cox.


The family will greet friends and relatives from 12:00noon until 2:00pm on Saturday December 29, 2007 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming. Military Rites services will be held at 2:00pm by his brothers and comrades of the VA Romo VFW Post #3165 of Negaunee and the Vietnam Veterans of America #180, whom will also serve as honorary pallbearers.
