Ishpeming, MI- Ken Harvala, age 87 of 1885 Southwood Dr. Ishpeming passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he been a resident since March 2011.
Ken was born August 6, 1926 in Ishpeming to Arthur J. & Ina M. (Aho) Harvala. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Ken worked for General Motors in Warren, Michigan in the engineering center working on current product engineering.
Ken was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and a life member of the Ishpeming V.F.W. Post 4573 and life time member of the Finnish Association Culture Center in Farmington Hills, MI. Ken was an avid reader, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed ski jumping when he was a kid, with many jumps down Suicide Hill. Ken enjoyed watching the Tigers and Lions.
Ken is survived by his wife Irene (Gustafson) Harvala, whom he married on December 3, 1949, 3 children: Kristine Harvala of Waterford MI, Mark (Lori) Harvala of Grand Blanc, MI and Greg (Nancy) Harvala of Warren, MI, 6 grandchildren: Sarah (Barry) Cotton, Marc (Jennifer) Harvala, Brooke (Ted) Burmeister, Lance (Stephanie) Harvala, Ryan Harvala and Valerie Harvala, 5 great grandchildren: Ian, Nathan, Owen, Noah, and Abigail along with 2 nieces : Gail Cowpland, and Grace (Rex) Sulsberger and a nephew Scott Cowpland, Ken was preceded in death by a son Glen Harvala and a sister Donna Cowpland.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday August 7, 2014 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Ken's family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday at the Bethel Lutheran Church from 10:30am until the time of service at 12:00 noon.
Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church, Marquette County Medical Care Facility Activities Fund, or the National Parkinson Foundation at parkinson.org in memory of Ken Harvala.
