Ishpeming – Kay Marie Nelson, age 58, of 1211 N. Third St., Ishpeming passed away at 2:20am on Tuesday May 19, 2009 at her home while surrounded by her loving family and friends. Kay had been under the care of the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Kay was born April 24, 1951 in Ishpeming the daughter of Douglas Evans and the late Dorothy (Anderson) Evans. Kay was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1969 and attended Northern Michigan University. Kay had worked for the Peninsula Bank for 24 years, many of those years spent as the Head Teller at the Main Office in Ishpeming, prior to retiring earlier this year. Kay had previously worked as the Secretary at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee where she had been a member for several years.
Kay was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, where she had been an active member of the Bell Choir. She enjoyed the outdoors from her childhood on, spending her summers during her youth at Lake Arfelin and then at "Camp Life" on the Dead River Basin during her adult years. Kay was an avid bowler, participating in the Thursday Night Women's League.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Ken A. Nelson of Ishpeming, two sons – Brett Nelson of New York, NY, and Gregg Nelson and his fiancée Jennie Bertucci of Sheboygan Falls, WI, her father Douglas Evans and mother-in-law Gail Evans both of Ishpeming, two brothers – Don (Linda) Evans of Tomahawk, WI and Gary Evans of Negaunee, a sister-in-law Pat Johnson of Negaunee, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous special friends. She was preceded in death by her mother Dorothy Evans and her father-in-law Alvin E. Nelson.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 until 8 pm on Thursday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, and again on Friday from 10 until 11am at the Bethel Lutheran Church. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday May 22, 2009 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. A luncheon will follow the service in the fellowship hall at the church.
