Clarksburg- Karen "Kiyi" R. Richards, age 67 passed away on a nice day in the summer July 7, 2015 at her residence in Clarksburg while in the loving care of her family.
Karen was born in Negaunee on October 3, 1947 the daughter of Hjlmer & Laina (Kontio) Rytilahti. She graduated from Republic High School, class of 1965 and from NMU with a practical nursing degree in 1966. Karen worked at Bell Memorial, Mather Nursing Center and retired from Marquette General Hospital in 2002.
Karen was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary; she enjoyed reading, traveling, camping and living at camp in Republic. Her biggest joy was time spent with her grandchildren. Karen will be missed by her canine companion "Toby".
Karen is survived by her loving husband of 45 years Harold James Richards, Sons: Mark (Amy) Richards of Clarksburg, James (Jessy) Richards of Greenwood Location, Grandchildren: Kori Irene, Daniel James, Kathryn Marie, Mackenzie Elizabeth, Bryan Mathew, Leland Jayce & their siblings & moms, Nikki & Dane, Heidi & Sadie Jo. She is also survived by her sisters thru love, Kay Niemi Mundhenk and the Nurmi girls, Georgiana Hebert, Hannah Wixtrom, Rita Kerkela, Sandy Couveau, Karen Perry and her best friend Mary Kerkela, also surviving are her in laws, father in law Theodore (Joyce) Richards, sisters in law and brothers in law: Mary Jane (Bruce) Laakso, Sam (Rae) Richards, Dale (Judy) Richards, Nick Richards, Bill (Tonya) Richards, along with numerous nieces, nephews, special cousin Rogie (Otto) Luoma along with many other cousins. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, step fathers: Chester Currie and Richard Yelland, mother in law Betty Richards, sister in law Margo Kari, nephew Bryan Kari and adopted sister Nancy Perry.
Karen only hoped that she made a difference in someone's life.
Karen's family will greet relatives and friends on Friday July 10, 2015 from 1:00-3:00pm at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:00 PM with Rev. Fr. Larry Van Damme officiating.
A luncheon will follow the service at the K/D Hall at St. Johns Church.
