Ishpeming – Karen L. (LaRock) Koski, age 62 of 250 Marble St., Ishpeming and formerly of 636 Co. Rd. in Negaunee, passed away on Monday March 17, 2008 at the Bell Hospital in Ishpeming due to complications from a long term lung illness.
Karen was born on November 29, 1945 in Crystal Falls, MI to the late George and Julia (Savord) Helgren. She moved to Ishpeming as a young girl and has resided in the Negaunee and Ishpeming area since. She is a 1963 graduate of Ishpeming High School and attended Northern Michigan University graduating with her LPN degree and later her RN degree. Karen worked as an RN at Bell Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She continued to work as an RN for Eastwood Nursing Center retiring in 2005 after 10 more years of dedication. She married John Koski on January 10, 2003.
Karen is a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Negaunee and the Ishpeming Coral Club. She also sang with the St. Paul Choir and was a Charter member of the St. Paul Concert Choir. Karen loved socializing with the numerous friends she had. She enjoyed gardening, both vegetables and flowers and spending time playing with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband John Koski of Ishpeming, MI, 2 Children: Sherri (Don) LaRock-MacDonald of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and Lance (Kristen) LaRock of Gwinn, MI, Step-son Brad Koski of Ypsilanti, MI, Sister: Joanne (Jack) Carey of Channing, MI, 4 Brothers: Kenny (Debbie) Helgren of Kingsford, MI, Jimmy (Wilma) Helgren of Channing, MI, Ralph (Gloria) Helgren of Milwaukee, WI, and Dorias "Butch" (Rae) Helgren of Bay City, MI, 2 Grandchildren: Kadie and Shanna LaRock, Step-grandchildren: Eric, Mitch, and Sean MacDonald along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Karen is preceded in death by a sister: Geri Laymen, brother: George Helgren Jr., and an infant brother: Robert Helgren
Funeral Services will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto officiating. Pallbearers will be Eric Hinze, Al Anttila, Will Olgren, Jim Carey, Michael Helgren, and Jimmy Helgren, Jr.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 5:00PM until 8:00PM at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Friday, March 21, 2008. The family will also greet friends and relatives on Saturday, March 22 from 10:00AM until the time of services at 11:00AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Negaunee.
A luncheon will follow the services at the Ishpeming VFW.
