Obituary

Marquette / Champion, MI - Julie A. Johnson, age 88, former longtime Champion resident passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025, while in the loving care of her family, staff members of  Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and the U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Julie was born in Negaunee, MI on May 16, 1936, a daughter of the late Ellen (Koski) and Jalmer  Mattson. She was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1954 and received her Registered Nurses degree from Northwestern (Abbott) Hospital  in Minneapolis. Julie worked as a RN at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming for over 40 years and loved every minute of it. She was a member of Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Survivors include 5 children - Lynn (John) Armbruster of Hermantown, MN; Don (Janene) Johnson of Negaunee; Leslie (Matt) Luke of Negaunee; Eric (Jane) Johnson of Deer River, MN; Andy (Tammy) Johnson, of Ishpeming, MI; 16 grandchildren - Ethan (Chelsea), Austin (Danielle), Adam (Maddy), Ellen (Cord), Rachael, Donnie (Genna), Jessa (Cody), Micah (Carly), Colin, Ben (Sommer), William (Claire), Caleb (Chloe), Isaiah, Maria, Maggie, Deion; 14 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law – Anna Mattson of Negaunee, Diana Johnson of Marquette, Susan Hintsala of Rogers, MN, Ronald Johnson of Hermantown, MN and Robert (Irene) Johnson of Cromwell, MN, along with numerous nieces and nephews and a host of brothers and sisters in faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald "Saudi" Johnson in 2020, her parents, sisters and brothers - Mildred (Uuno) Ropponen, Lawrence "Fudd" (Kay) Mattson, Richie Mattson, Shirley (Ted) Kero, Margie (Ernie) Isaacs, Donald "Farmer" Mattson.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 1:00pm on Tuesday April 22, 2025, at the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, Co. Rd. 492, Negaunee. Funeral Services will follow at 1:00pm on Tuesday, at the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee with Adam Salmela officiating. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee Twp. Pallbearers will be Julie's 11 grandsons.

The family wishes to extend a "Special Thanks" to Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and UP Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care, especially Cheryl, Brooke and Sarah.
