Obituary

Negaunee- Julia R (Rappazini) Smith, age 101 of 104 Malton Rd. Negaunee, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Woodland Assisted Living where she has been a resident since January 2003.

Julia was born on February 13, 1910 in Negaunee to the late Anthony "Tony" and Paula (Perucco) Rappazini. She attended St Paul Catholic Grade School and graduated from the 8th grade in 1925.

Julia worked at Levine Brothers department store in Negaunee as a clerk. In 1940 she moved to Milwaukee, WI where she entered the Bureau of Home Nursing and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She went to work as a nurse in the Infirmary of the Signal Battery War Plant. At the end of the War and the closing of the plant she went on to do private duty nursing in the Milwaukee area.

Julia married William L. Smith at St. Rita's Church in Milwaukee September 14, 1946. She was a member of the Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and Jolly Elders. Julia was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Negaunee.

After they both retired in 1990 they moved back to Negaunee where they resided in the Teal Lake Apartments. After Mr. Smith death in 1998 later Julia moved to Woodland Assisted Living.

Julia is survived by her nieces Rita (Robert) Corradina of Ishpeming, Kathy (Joseph) McCormick of Negaunee, Lois (David) St.Onge of Ishpeming and a nephew Raymond (Ilene) Rappazini of Negaunee. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews living out of the area and a sister in law Shirley Rappazini of Ft Walton Beach, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband William L Smith in 1998 her parents, two sisters: Carmen Roberts and Anna Piziali, and two brothers: Eugene "Geno" and Joseph Rappazini.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Negaunee with the Rev. Msgr Peter Oberto officiating. The family will greet friends at the church on Tuesday from 10:00AM until the time of the Mass at 11:00AM.

Inurnment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery in the summer.

The family gives there sincere thanks to the staff at Woodland Assisted Living for their loving care of Julia and also to the caregivers of UP Home Health and Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the UP Home Health and Hospice or St. Paul Endowment Fund in memory of Julia.
