Gwinn- Judy K. Harvala, age 67 of Gwinn died peacefully Saturday, October 10, 2009 at her home on Bass Lake, under the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Judy was born August 28, 1942 in Cobden, IL, the daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Stewart) Dillow. She lived in different areas including Cobden, Phoenix, Kalamazoo and Waukegan where she graduated from Waukegan High East Campus in 1960. She received a scholarship to attend Augustana School of Nursing where she graduated in 1963.
Judy worked for Augustana Hospital in Chicago for a short while then Victory Hospital in Waukegan, IL, after her marriage to George Harvala on June 20, 1964 she worked for Dr. Fahey in Waukegan. In 1968 the family moved to Ishpeming and in 1976 she began employment at Bell Memorial Hospital, working in the emergency room, retiring in January 1995.
Judy was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where she belonged to Ruth Circle. She enjoyed flower gardening and was an extremely talented crafter and knitter who even taught herself to tat.. She and her husband George enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii where they spent some of their winters where George's cousin Donna & Connor Cowpland always made them feel at home. Judy also enjoyed visiting her family in southern Illinois. Grandma Judy was a wonderful cook who made the best pancakes.
Judy is survived by her husband George, 4 children: Steven (Stephanie) Harvala of Ishpeming, Keith (Julie) Harvala of Negaunee, Allen (Susan) Harvala of Escanaba and Sandra (Brian) Willey of Ishpeming, grandchildren: Janelle, Ashlee, Alex, Cortney, Logan, Chaz, Trent, Nicolle, Sydney, Tyler, Dylan, Cory, Tony, Jake, and Tyler, 3 brothers: Jack, Larry (Terri) and Rick Dillow all of Missouri along with numerous nieces and nephews. Judy was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew Nathan Dillow.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. A visitation to be held at the church on Thursday from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm.
Pallbearers will be Judy's nephews.
