National Mine – Joyce A. Topel, age 80, former National Mine resident, passed away on Friday June 23, 2017 at UP Health System Marquette following a brief stay at the Eastwood Nursing Center.

Joyce was born December 16, 1936 in Aurora, IL the daughter of George and Elizabeth Potter.  She was a graduate of Plainfield High School in Illinois.  Joyce went on to receive her associate degree from Joliet Community College.  Locally, Joyce was the owner of Ely Creek Furs where she made fur coats and hats.  Joyce enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing along with woodworking and did some crocheting in her younger years.

Survivors include three sons – Wayne (Heidi) Carter of Utah, Scott (Crystal) Carter of Negaunee and John (Stacey) Carter of Marquette, 9 grandchildren: Samantha, Caitlin, Dalton, Derek, Daryn, Zachary, Shawn, Ashley and Michael Carter.  She was preceded in death by her husband Dennis "Tapper John" Topel.

Cremation will take place with private family services to be held at a later date.
