Ishpeming- Joyce Marion Kulie, age 86 of 703 W. Empire St. Ishpeming, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility under the loving care of her family and UP Home Health and Hospice.
Joyce was born December 11, 1924 in Michigamme (Spurr Twp), the daughter of Harry and Effie (Martin) Kintgen. She attended Ishpeming Public Schools through her junior year, and graduated from Champion High School in 1942. On April 15, 1944 she married Clayton Kulie. She and her husband worked in war manufacturing plants in Detroit until late 1945. Joyce also worked as a cook in several restaurants for a number of years.
She raised her six children in Champion, later moving to the Greenwood Location area in 1972. Joyce loved traveling on the Debbi Tours bus with Lane Dawson, and saw all 50 states. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed challenging crossword puzzles. A devout Christian, her life was centered around the church.
Joyce is survived by her sons Ron (Darlene) Kulie of Republic, Mick (Rose) Kulie of Crystal Falls, daughters, Mary (Steve) Kellow of Republic and Denise (Ray) Hill of Clarksburg, and a sister Nancy (Don) Kangas of Muskego, WI. Surviving grandchildren are Jeff, Mark, Tony, and Andrew Kulie, Anne, April, Jerry, and Jamie Hill, Kevin Skytta, Sarah Wheeler, and Amy Sinclair. Surviving great grandchildren are Katy and Alex Kulie, D.J. Felder, Daisy and John Wheeler, Niko and Kiana Takaki, Lauren and Chase Mattila, Ella Lundin, Tim and Danny Sinclair.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two children, Scott Kulie and Debra Jones, and her brothers, Calvin and Wayne Kintgen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 12:00noon with Fr. Greg Heikkala officiating. Joyce's family will greet friends beginning at 10:00am at the church.
Pallbearers will be Joyce's grandchildren.
