Obituary
Joyce Marie Benzie, age 89, of 1837 Hewitt St. Ishpeming, Michigan passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 in the loving care of her family, Lake Superior Hospice and the staff at Teal Lake Senior Living Community.
She was born April 10, 1927 in Iron Mountain to William Henry and Ida Mae (LaLonde) Polkinghorne.
She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1945 and obtained an associate degree in business from the Dundon's Business School in Iron Mountain in 1947.
On August 16, 1947 she married the love of her life, Fred J. Benzie Jr. He preceded her in death on September 4, 1989. They had one son Fred J. Benzie III
Joyce was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming where for many years she served as the financial secretary, treasurer of the Women's Society and on numerous boards. She was a life member of the Past Matrons of Hematite Chapter #190, Order of the Eastern Star. She served as the treasurer for this society for many years. She also was active in the Daughters of the Nile
The greatest joy in Joyce's life was her son and grandchildren. She made many sacrifices to assure that they were provided with the resources and support to further their education and succeed in life. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her son Fred J. Benzie (Elizabeth), and two grandchildren Alissa and Joshua Benzie, several nieces and nephews (Alice Branam, George LaFave, Patsy Wender, and Rita Warren) and special friend Mable Smith.
The family will greet friends and relatives at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 801 Hemlock St, Ishpeming from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm on Monday, August 22, 2016. An Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm at the church, followed by a memorial officiated by the Reverend J.J. Mannschreck. A luncheon will follow the service.
Pallbearers are Joshua Benzie, George LaFave, Scott Branam, Roger Schofield.
Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
