Joseph L. Skufca

Ishpeming- Joseph L. Skufca, age 96 of 211 W. Euclid St. Ishpeming, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 06, 2007 at his home.

Joseph was born April 30, 1910 in Calumet, MI to Joseph & Anna (LaMuth) Skufca. Joe served in the United States Army during World War II as a medic-ambulance driver. Joe started working as an underground miner at the age of 16. He worked 16 years for the C&H Mining Company in the copper mines; he worked in Lead, SD in a gold mine and later worked 20 years at the Tracey Mine for Jones & Laughlin Mining Co. (LTV), where he retired from in 1973. After his mining career Joe worked at St. Vincent DePaul for many years.

Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he belonged to the Holy Name Society; he also belonged to St. Joseph-St Vincent DePaul Conference and once served as District Treasurer of St. Vincent DePaul. Joe was a life member of the Ishpeming V.F.W. Post #4573. In his youth Joe enjoyed playing hockey and baseball and had the nickname "Homer".

Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret (Gorup) Skufca, 3 children: Fr. Ronald Skufca of Menominee, MI, Roger (Patti) Skufca of Houghton and Dianne (Mark) Ledel of Mammoth Lakes, CA, a sister Angeline Skufca of L'Anse, a brother Albert Skufca of Calumet along with many nieces & nephews. Joe was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming. Fr. Ronald Skufca will be the celebrant and Fr James Challancin & Fr. Mark Inglot will be concelebrants of the Mass along with the Priests of the Diocese of Marquette. Bishop Alexander Sample will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00p.m. on Monday, April 9, 2007 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home where the St. Vincent DePaul Society will conduct a memorial service at 6:30p.m. and a parish wake service will be held at 7:00p.m.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
