Ishpeming–Joseph Lloyd Seelen, age 63, of 660 Mather Ave, Ishpeming
passed away on Monday, April 11, 2011. He had been a patient at Bell
Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming since Saturday.
Joe was born April 23, 1947 in Little Falls, MN where he grew up,
attended school and worked on local farms until serving in the United
States Navy. After his return, he married Carol Jutz on August 23,
1969 in Lastrup, MN. They moved to South St. Paul, MN where he worked
in the construction trade. Eventually they moved to Ishpeming. He
worked as an electrician for Frailing Electric for eleven years. In
1986 he started and operated Seelen Construction until retiring in
2006.
Joe was very proud of his family. He will be remembered as a very
loving and giving person. Joe enjoyed playing cards. He loved
fishing, hunting, and camp; especially the pig roasts and deer
seasons. Joe loved having company at camp as well as at home and
enjoyed a wide circle of friends of all ages.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Carol Seelen, 3 sons–Shawn
Seelen (Tiffany Irvine), Adam (Lisa) Seelen, and Gabe (Tricia) Seelen,
6 grandchildren–Kaitlyn Seelen, Cole Seelen, Ashley Seelen, Lydia
Seelen, Janelle Seelen, and Melanie Seelen, all of Ishpeming. Joe was
one of 15 children including 5 sisters–Celia Dolney, Cathy (Don)
Okerman, and Lorraine (Jerry) Hiemenz of Little Falls, MN, Dee (Ardie)
Kafka of Minneapolis, MN and Evie (Ron) Splittstoesser of Braham, MN 4
brothers–Arnie, Nick and Herb Seelen, all of Little Falls, MN,
and Sam (Laura) Seelen, of Pierz, MN, along with numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Frank
& Kathryn (Ausmussen) Seelen, 2 sisters, Marge Mengelkoch and Helen
Stein, 3 brothers, Francis "Shorty" Seelen, and two infants brothers,
Matthew and Francis Seelen.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral
Home on Thursday, April 14th from 6:00 until concluding with a prayer
service at 8:00 p.m. On Friday, April 15th, visitation will be from
10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with a Mass
of Christian Burial officiated by the Rev. Fr. James Challancin at
11:00 a.m. Lunch will follow in the St. Joseph Parish Hall.
Internment with military honors will take place at 1:45 p.m. at the
Ishpeming Cemetery.
