Ishpeming- Joseph Poirier, age 97 life long Ishpeming resident, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Marquette General Hospice Suite under the loving care of family and Lake Superior Hospice.
Joseph was born October 28, 1912 in Ely Township to Joseph & Exillia (Pepin) Poirier. He attended Ishpeming High School to the 11th grade and then went to work at a logging camp for three years as an equipment operator. Joe worked at Michigan Gold Mine, Kielinen Contractors as a carpenter and from 1947 to 1977 at Robbins Flooring Mill where he retired as the warehouse supervisor. He also worked as a salesman for the National Press and Cresent Paper Company.
Joe was an active member of his parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church, served as Ishpeming District President of St. Vincent DePaul where he volunteered much of his time. Joe was also a member of the Knight of Columbus and the Junction Club. He enjoyed playing the drums and fiddle (violin) in country bands; he also enjoyed playing for the elderly at local nursing homes and for privates parties.
Joe is survived by children: Diane L. Poirier of Ishpeming, Robert (Rose) Saxwold of Ishpeming, Timothy Saxwold of Las Vegas, and Geraldine Nault of Marquette, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Robyn (Paul) Altobello, Arica & Ian, Debbee (Joe) Horton, Joe, Jakob and Sydnee, Rodney (Kris) Poirier, Robert, Andrew and Emma, Cara Buchanan, Reese and Ryan, Kay (Jay) Barber, Grace and Owen, Jeff (Jenny) Nault, Luke and Avery. Joe was the eldest of seven children; he has surviving brothers Edelore Poirier of Ishpeming and William (Edna) Poirier of Haines City, FL along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe is also survived by his special caring neighbors Marvin and Luara Kantola. Joe was preceded in death by his first wife Marion (Ombrello) in 1978 his second wife Antoinette (Saxwold) in 2000, a son Robert J. Poirier in 1981, brothers: Richard and Ray and sisters Mae Salmons and Gladys Rajala.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00am on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. Greg Heikkala officiating with assistance from Rev. Lauri O. Maki. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9:30-11:00am on Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church where the St. Vincent DePaul Society will conduct a memorial service at 10:00am.
