Obituary

Ishpeming - Joseph Gregory Mahoski, 91, of 2009 Jackson Avenue Ishpeming, passed away Wednesday, October 26th at the Brookridge Heights Memory Care Unit where he and Laurabelle resided for the past five months. He was surrounded by the loving care of his family, the Brookridge staff and UP Home Health & Hospice.

Joe was born in Caledonia, Wisconsin on March 7, 1920, a son of the late Sophie and Walter Machowski. He graduated from Amasa High School, attended Eastern Michigan University and received a bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan College of Education (NMU). He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in WWII. He managed Selin's Furniture Store in Negaunee and later their store in Ishpeming. Most recently Joe worked at Household Appliance in Ishpeming.

Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he once served on the Church Council as its president and where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He was very active and volunteered much of his time with the St. Vincent dePaul Society where he served as District President; he was a charter member of the Ishpeming Kiwanis Club and past board member at the Ishpeming Credit Union. Joe was active in the Ishpeming community, being involved with the Ishpeming Diplomats, Chamber of Commerce and, with others, started the Ishpeming Little League, being one of the first coaches. Joe enjoyed his involvement in PAAC where he acted, sang and tap danced in several musical productions at the Vista Theater in Negaunee. His hobbies include gardening, fishing, drawing and painting signs and banners. Joe delighted in a bumper crop of blueberries. He was an avid Packer, Brewers and Badger fan. Joe was a family man who found great pride and enjoyment watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their many activities.

Joe is survived by his wife Laurabelle (Ponchaud) Mahoski who he married on January 3, 1946; a son, Gregory (Marilyn) Mahoski, of Ishpeming; two daughter, Laura (Marvin) Kantola, of Ishpeming and Carol Hammar, of St. Paul, MN. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Greg (Noel) Mahoski Jr, Bradley (Shari) Mahoski, Cory (Lisa) Mahoski, Ryan (Lori) Mahoski, Sarah (Andy) Stevens, Michael Kantola, Justin Hammar, Emily (Andrew) Harer, Elizabeth Hammar and Ellen (fiance' Kenneth Willkinson) Hammar, 10 great grandchildren, two sisters, Evelyn Grattan, of Corvallis, OR and Eleanor (Robert) Goodreau, of Iron Mountain; brother-in-law Charles Koskela, of Fullerton, CA, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Henry Mahoski and Richard Machowski and sisters; Irene Mechon, Virginia Belongie and Jeanette Wickman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon Monday, October 31st at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ishpeming with Rev. Fr. James Challancin officiating.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St Joseph Catholic Church on Monday from 10:00am until the time of the service at noon. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joe's grandsons.

Memorial considerations may be directed to the Ishpeming St. Vincent dePaul Society or St. Joseph Catholic Church Choir in memory of Joe. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation for the exceptional care and kindness Joe received while a resident at both the Valente Care Facility and Brookridge Heights Memory Care Unit.
