Joseph Earl Harper, Jr., age 78, passed away on May 24, 2026 in the Philippines, where he had lived with his wife of 25 years, Melency.

Joe embraced life with a love for the outdoors, a deep appreciation for friendship, and a genuine enjoyment of simple pleasures. He was happiest surrounded by good company, exploring the beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, or spending time at the places that brought him peace and happiness.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, serving time in Vietnam and later continued that commitment through the Naval Reserves. His time in the military was an important chapter of his life and provided him with experiences and friendships that he carried with him through the years.

Following his service, Joe built a career as an electrician with CCI, where he worked for 30 years before retiring. Joe was a proud member of the Ishpeming Elks Lodge #447, the Ishpeming VFW, and the Riverside Club, where he formed many lifelong friendships. He valued the camaraderie and fellowship these organizations provided and enjoyed spending time with the many friends he made through the years.

A true outdoorsman at heart, Joe found peace and happiness in the beauty of nature. He especially enjoyed taking drives on the Red Road and spending time at his beloved camp on Boise Creek, where he could appreciate the quiet, natural surroundings he loved so much. Some of his happiest moments were spent outdoors, enjoying the places that always felt like home.

After retirement, Joe began a new chapter in the Philippines with Melency. Together, they built a beautiful resort and enjoyed welcoming guests, hosting gatherings, and sharing good times with friends and visitors. Joe also became a member of VFW Post Overseas, where he continued to enjoy camaraderie and fellowship in his later years.

Joe will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his friendships, his compassion for animals, and the simple joys he found throughout life. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Melency; his children, Amy Hebert, Tina Romback, and Teresa Perry, and their families; his grandchildren, Ryan Harper, Gabby Kangas, and Jordan Hebert; Trevor Romback and Tanner Romback; Lola Morrison, Grace Morrison, and Quinlan Keranen; his great-grandchildren, Letty and Luna; his siblings, Judy Fickes, JoAnne Armitage, and Jane Hitesman; and the many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Harper, Sr. and Carol Harper; his sister, Janet Talbert; and his granddaughter, Courtney Poirier.

Joe will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
