Champion, MI – Rev. John A. Roy, former pastor at the Good News Assembly of God, age 75, passed away on Wednesday March 13, 2019 at his home, while under the loving care of his family.
John was born in St. John, North Dakota on February 20, 1944, son of the late Dorothy (Rardon) and John F. Roy. He was a graduate of the North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, MN. John married Margery DuBois on August 14, 1965. Roy's first calling was to Adrian, MI followed by a short stay in Morancy, MI where he served the Assembly of God Churches. He then built the East Jordan Assembly of God Church where he was pastor from 1967-1972. Cadillac, MI was his next calling from 1972-1976 where he was instrumental in the building of the new sanctuary at the Assembly of God Church. Then came Belleville, MI where he was pastor at the Assembly of God from 1976-1981. He moved to Holland, MI briefly prior to becoming the minister at the Bethel Missionary Assembly of God in Livonia, MI from 1982-1989. Pastor Roy then moved to Payson, AZ where he built the Payson Assembly of God from the ground up. In 2002 he moved to Ishpeming and was pastor at the Good News Assembly of God until his retirement in 2012. He is a current member of North Iron Church Ishpeming.
Pastor Roy enjoyed the outdoors including camping, hunting and fishing. He was instrumental in the Teen Challenge Ministries which was a rehabilitation program for troubled teens and ministered to many in nursing homes. He showed his creative side in crafting elaborate sets for church plays/contatas. He especially enjoyed time spent with his family and providing food for their hearts and souls. He was always building, repairing or installing something—a room here, a furnace there, including building a house in Belleville, Michigan, where he planted a huge garden filled with some of his favorite veggies—especially sweet corn. He LOVED to cook—almost as much as he enjoyed eating & sharing his delicious creations! He'd often spearhead and/or cook dinners or make desserts for an entire church event.
Survivors include his wife Margery (DuBois) Roy of Champion, 5 children, Rev. Gregory (Sabrina) Roy of Flat Rock; Timothy (Mary) Roy of Boulder City, NV; David (Maria) Roy of Ishpeming; Breanna (Jeff) Wood of Champion; and Christopher Roy of Champion, five sisters, Betty (Ernest) Mock of Garrison, ND; Faye (Robert) McNamara of Kawai, Hawaii; Patsy (Bruce) Haugeberg, Minnie Krueger (Edward Davis), Hazel Bauer (Jeff Hawkenson), Marjory (Tim) Eisenzimmer, and Pam (Calvin) Arndt all of Minot, ND; two brothers, Mackey (Janell) Roy, and Duane Roy both of Minot, ND; 10 grandchildren, a great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.
