Obituary

Ishpeming - John Paul Peterson, age 89, formerly of 778 Duncan Ave., passed away peacefully at 2:15am on Saturday October 24, 2009 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where he had been a resident since July of 2003.

John was born in Ishpeming on July 2, 1920, the son of John and Rose (Morin)
Peterson. John, who often went by "Paul", was a lifelong resident of Ishpeming, graduating from Ishpeming High School in 1938. He was a member of the U.P. championship basketball team that year. He later graduated from Northwest Institute of Technology in Minneapolis. Paul was employed at Bell Memorial Hospital as a Medical Technologist for nearly 45 years. He was a WWII Army veteran, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater in Guam and the Philippines. He was part of a medical troop led by Charles Mayo, who later founded the Mayo Clinic. Paul was an active volunteer in the community. He served as the head of the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Ishpeming for many years, and was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ishpeming V.F.W. He was also an avid sports booster and could often be found attending local sporting events, especially when his grandchildren were participating.

He will be fondly remembered as a man who loved to talk with people and as someone who always enjoyed a good laugh.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathie (Mike) Eliason of Ishpeming; two sons Michael (Laura) of Grand Haven, and Christopher (Anna) of Norway; his grandchildren Heath (Teresa) Eliason of New Glarus, WI, Hayley (fiancé Matt Pap)Eliason of Ishpeming, Ryan and Bryce Peterson of Grand Haven; a brother Donald (Rita) of Ishpeming; sisters Irene (John) Eskela, Rosemary (James) Kutchie of Ishpeming, and Sue (Roger) LeDuc of Kingsford; and a special friend Florence Wright of Ishpeming, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Robert ("Skippy").

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 – 5:30pm on Thursday Oct. 29, 2009 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 5:30pm with the Rev. Fr. James Challancin to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Joseph memorial fund in John's memory.
