Ishpeming - John Clifford Niemi, age 90 of 746 Maurice St. Ishpeming passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.

John was born August 22, 1927 in Laurium, MI to John H. and Jennie (Bertu) Niemi. He grew up in the Gwinn area, raised by a great aunt and lived in the Ishpeming area since 1966. John served in the US Army Air Force during World War II.

John worked as a diamond driller for E.J. Longyear Corp for 40 years, working all over the world including the mountains of Chili, deserts of Saudi Arabia, and the jungles of Africa, Brazil and Costa Rica. He also worked for 5 years at Marquette General Hospital a transporter, retiring in 1989. John was a member of the Ishpeming V.F.W. Post #4573 and enjoyed spending time at camp on Pike Lake.

John is survived by children: Ronald (Linda) Niemi of National Mine, Daryl Niemi of Palmer, Sid Niemi of Palmer, Lawrence (Helen) Niemi of Cottage Grove, IL, Douglas Niemi of Ishpeming, David Niemi of Milwaukee, WI, Scott (Barbara) Niemi of Ishpeming, Jon Abba of Harvey and Darryl J. Niemi of Ishpeming, a brother William (Maryann) Niemi of Gwinn, along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joan on Jan. 17, 2018, son Edward F. Niemi, brothers – Harry and Werner Niemi and sisters – Agnes Romback and Irene Sequin.

Honoring the wishes of John, there will be no public service.

The family would like to thank the staff of MCMCF for the wonderful care given to John while a resident there.
