Ishpeming Twp- John "Hud" Nelson, age 54 of Ishpeming (North Lake location) passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

John was born April 14, 1963 in Ishpeming to the late John and Genevieve (Belanger) Nelson. He graduated from Westwood High School, class of 1981. John worked as a corrections officer for the State of Michigan at Alger Co, Baraga Co and Marquette Branch Prisons.

Hud was a hard worker, he enjoyed helping others and was an excellent builder. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, spending time at camp and cutting fire wood. Hud bowled in the Ishpeming bowling league and played softball for the Congress. He enjoyed cooking and listening to all kinds of music.

Hud is survived by 3 children: Marissa Nelson of Tacoma, WA, Jacob Nelson of Ishpeming and Alexis "Lexi" Nelson of Marquette, 3 sisters: Nancy (Mike Perry) Vahamaa of Ishpeming, Janice Mattson of Suomi Location and Debbie (Randy) VanSlambrouck of Cheyenne, WY, special friend and the mother of his 3 children, Yvonne Gardner, a special cousin, Danny Nelson along with numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Hud was preceded in death by his parents John and Genevieve Nelson, brothers in law: Gus Vahamaa and Steve Mattson.

Hud's family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday, August 13, 2017 from 1:00-3:00pm at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home where a memorial service will be held at 3:00pm with Fr. Larry Van Damme officiating.
