Obituary
John O. "Sonny" Mustonen, age 69, of 1500 Co Rd PAA in Tilden Twp. passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at UP Health System Marquette where he had been admitted that day.
John was born March 21, 1947 in Ewen, MI the son of Arne A. and Esther S. (Koski) Mustonen. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1965. John served in the United States Coast Guard mainly on an ice breaker in Antarctica. Upon his discharge from the Coast Guard he attended the New England Technical Institute where he received a degree in electronics. He then worked for the Simplex Co. as a technician for 18 years in Rhode Island. Sonny returned to this area in 1989 and had worked for the Interlake Steamship Co as a conveyor man on the ore boats for 10 years retiring in 2000 due to his rheumatoid arthritis.
Sonny was a member of the Lillian Larson American Legion Post #114 where he had serve a past post commander. In his younger years he enjoyed playing hockey. Sonny loved time spent hunting and fishing along with cheering for the New England Patriots.
Survivors include his wife of the past 21 years Lois Mustonen of Ishpeming, his mother Esther Mustonen of Ishpeming, a daughter Tracey (Mark) Patenaude of RI, a son Christopher Mustonen of FL, step-sons – Jason (Bobbie Sue) Roeder of Ishpeming and Jeffrey Roeder of Adrian, MI, a sister Diane (Doug) Collar of Ishpeming, 6 grandchildren – Mark Martin Patenaude, Stephanie and Brianna Mustonen, & Canyon, Chase & Joey Roeder, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Arne Mustonen.
Sonny's family will greet relatives and friends from 1:00-2:00pm on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming. A memorial service will follow at 2:00pm on Tuesday with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. A luncheon will follow at the Lillian Larson American Legion, Post #114 in Greenwood Location.
