Ishpeming – John B. Marietti, age 80, of 855 S Pine St., passed away Monday morning, June 22nd, 2009 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and under the care of the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice at the time of his death.
John was born in Ishpeming on June 21, 1929 the son of the late John J. and Ruth (Dompierre) Marietti. John was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1948. John married Florence June Nault on August 9, 1950 in Ishpeming. John worked as a Milkman (Teamsters Union), delivering for the Northern Dairy, Bancroft Dairy and then for Jilbert's Dairy. He went on to work as a custodian and bus driver for the NICE community schools until his retirement. John was an active member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Ishpeming Elks.
John enjoyed sports, especially basketball, baseball, and fast pitch softball, which he actively participated in well into his adult life. He refereed basketball and umpired baseball games for many years. John also enjoyed teaching the love of sport through coaching Jr. High basketball and track at the St. John's School, and later at the C.L. Phelps Middle School and the Ishpeming High School. He always was up for a good game of Cribbage, and listening to some traditional country music.
John is survived by two daughters: Mary (Sam) Peterson of Marquette, Laura (Kurt) Rundman of Ishpeming, four sons: Tom (Sherry) Marietti of Grand Rapids, Ed (Karen) Marietti of Manistique, Steve (Diana) Marietti of Brooklyn Park, MN, John (Christina) Marietti of Big Lake, MN, grandchildren – Keith (Erica) Jarvis, David (Alice) Jarvis, Kara, Kyle (fiancée Jennifer Sarasin), and Kaleb Rundman, Jonah, Maria, Brody, and Bailey Marietti, Jen (Joel) Norton, Jeff, CJ and Brian Jenerou, Eduardo, Christian and Jordan Santacana, and Tom, Tim, and Tyler Ahrens, great grandchildren – Christian, Jerrod, and Whitleigh Jarvis and Brandon Schiefel. A foster son Leonard Hansen of Hermansville, seven brothers – Gerald (Sally), Robert (Cheryl), Paul, Raymond, Richard (Mary Lou), William (Jan), and Dave Marietti, seven sisters – Marie (Ensio) Ostola, Ruth Jean (Norman) Holmes, Alice (Eugene) Dellangelo, Dorothy (David) Meyer, Edith Epper, Florence (Daniel) Cain, and Margaret (Joseph) DiStefano, a special friend Catherine Gervasi, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence on Dec. 20, 2007, a sister Judith and a foster son Rueben Hansen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming, at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, June 25th, 2009 with the Rev. Fr. James Challancin officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives from 9:00am until the time of the service at the church. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
Pallbearers will be John's Grandsons.
