Ishpeming Twp- John "Jack" P. Junak, age 88, Ishpeming Township resident passed away Friday, December 30, 2016.
John was born April 29, 1928 at home in Diorite to the late John E. and Mildred C. (Larmour) Junak. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1946 and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
John worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 37 years, working underground at the Mather B Mine where he was a foreman. He also worked at the Mather A Mine, Republic Mine and he retired from the Tilden Mine as a pit foreman. Following retirement from CCI, John drove school bus for the NICE Community Schools.
John was a founding member of the Ishpeming Township Volunteer Fire Department where he served for over 26 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a member of the Knight of Columbus for 70 years. John loved the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at camp which he built. He also enjoyed woodworking, shooting guns and loved time spent with his grandchildren.
John is survived by 2 children: John P. (Valerie) Junak and Yvonne (Joseph) Juidici both of Ishpeming, a brother David (Diane) Junak of Ishpeming, 5 grandchildren: Andrea (Jason) Grover, Jessica (Ryan) Knapp, Amanda (fiancée Sam Gerber) Junak, Brianna (Mike) Becka, and Tim (Taryn) Juidici, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 50 years, Patricia Junak, 2 sisters: Ruth Johnson and Mildred Smail and a great grandson Payton Junak.
John's family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00-11:00 am on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am with Fr. Larry Van Damme officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 at 10:45 am followed by a eulogy.
Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
A luncheon will follow the Mass in the K/D Hall at St. Johns.
Honor Guard will be members of the Ishpeming Township Volunteer Fire Department.
