Obituary

Ishpeming – John H. "Jan" Knudsen, age 87, of 707 Park St. Ishpeming passed away at 8:55am on Monday November 8, 2010 in the Intensive Care Unit at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.


John was born May 18, 1923 the son of the late Archie and Ruth (Curphy) Knudsen. John was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1941. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He was part of the European Theater of operations, having seen action in the D-Day invasion on Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to Ishpeming following the War and was employed at C.C.I. working at the Cliffs Shaft Mine until its closure, being one of the last miners to leave the mine. He went on to work as a service truck driver at the Empire Mine, retiring in 1985 after over 40 years with the company.


Jan was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church. He enjoyed time spent at camp on the Dead River Basin during the summer months, and in retirement wintering in Orange Beach, AL. He enjoyed playing cribbage for over 60 years in the Ishpeming Cribbage League, and never turned down the opportunity to play a few games against any willing participant. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. Jan was a member of the Ishpeming V.F.W., the Ishpeming Elks Club, and the VASA Lodge.


Survivors include a daughter Lynn (Jerald) Seppi of Fort Myers, FL, a son John L. (Elaine) Knudsen of Chesterfield, MO, 3 grandchildren – Sara Rickelman of DePere, WI, Christopher (Janine) Seppi of Windermere, FL and Abbie Knudsen of Springfield, MO, a great grandchild Hazel Seppi of Windermere, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife Carol on Nov. 9, 2008, his parents and 2 brothers – William and Donald Knudsen.


The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until 11:00am on Thursday Nov. 11, 2010 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, where memorial service will follow at 11:00am with the Rev. Phyllis DeWitt to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery Columbarium. A luncheon will follow the services at the Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming.
