Au Train, MI – John M. "Red Ball" Davis, age 67 of Au Train, passed away on Thursday August 4, 2016 at UP Health System Marquette where he had been a patient since this past Monday.
Johnny was born July 16, 1949 in Phelps, WI the son of the late Arthur R. and Eveline E. (Lyons) Davis Sr. He grew up in Land O'Lakes in his early childhood prior to moving to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Johnny then served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a Sergeant. Upon his honorable discharge from the service he met and married Wilma J. Lucero and together they raised two daughters, Bonnie and Tricia, mainly in Colorado. John worked as an Ironworker for many years on various construction projects around the United States including in the local area along with stints in Colorado, California, Nevada and Wisconsin.
Johnny moved back to this area in the late 1990's and has resided here since. In 2007 he helped build his home overlooking Lake Superior in Au Train. In 2010 he met the love of his life Toni Saari, whom he had spent the past six years with. Johnny was always full of life and energy and was an avid Harley Davidson rider. Johnny loved speed and had a special bond with his '64 Nova. He also loved watching his grandchildren, boating, fishing, riding ATV's, fixing anything, along with spending time with family and friends. He had been a member of the Lillian Larson American Legion Post #114.
Survivors include his loving companion Toni Saari of Au Train, two daughters – Bonnie (Kirk) Follett of Johnstown, Co and Tricia (Fred) Nunn of Greeley, CO, sister Deborah (David) Reed of Au Train, brother Jimmy (Pauline) Hastings of Greenwood Location, 3 grandchildren – Taylor (Chynna) Dunn, Logan (Amber) Follett and Gage Davis, 2 great grandchildren – Everlee Dunn and Riley Follett along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers - Teddy and Arthur Jr. and 2 sisters - Frances and Nancy.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America at 1:00pm on Monday August 8, 2016 at the Lillian Larson American Legion Post #114 in Greenwood Location. Following the services a celebration of Johnny's life will take place in the American Legion Post #114 where there will be a time to share memories and a meal to follow.
