Obituary
Michigamme- John A. "Mayor" Olson, age 67 of 325 E. Main St. Michigamme, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.
John was born March 31, 1944 in Marquette to John K. & Margaret (Rublein) Olson. John was elected at the age of 26 to the Michigamme Township Board, and has served as Supervisor of Michigamme for the past 41 years. John worked for Cleveland Cliffs for 30 years retiring from the Tilden Mine in 2004.
John has served on the Michigan Association of Township Supervisors board since it began. John served as president of the Marquette County Township Association and currently its vice president. John was chair of MarqTran, and Treasurer of the West Marquette County Landfill Authority, served on the County Board of Supervisors, and Central Dispatch Policy Board. John was a member of the committee that wrote the new Michigan law and associated rules regulating sulfide mining.
While Supervisor of Michigamme Township, John has held the positions of Assessor, chairman of Board of Review, served on the Michigamme Planning Committee, DDA, Fire Board and a member of the Michigamme Twp Fire Department, Michigamme Lions Club, Michigamme Museum and was chair of the All School Class Reunion.
John was not only involved in local government, but enjoyed sports, watching baseball, football, basketball and volleyball especially when his nieces played. He will be missed at the table of his coffee clutchers.
John is survived by a brother Paul (Virginia) Olson and a sister Joan (Leighton) Carlisle both of Michigamme, 5 nieces and nephews, Robert (Jodi) Olson, Jennifer (William) Zwick, Jim (Jean) Carlisle, Cathy (Robert) Taylor and Sally (Joe) Carlisle, 8 great nieces and nephews Samantha, Jereme, Bailey, Katrina (Matt) Zumf, Cheyenne, Tobi, Tristan, and Joey, 1 great-great niece Ann, along with many cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother John.
Funeral services for John will be held 12:00 noon Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the Woodland United Methodist Church in Michigamme with Rev. Mark Ryan officiating. Interment will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.
A luncheon will be held at the Michigamme Township Community Building, upstairs, following the funeral service.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 30, 2011 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00pm and on Wednesday at Woodland United Methodist Church from 10:00am until the time of service at 12:00noon.
Pallbearers will be Robert Olson, Jim Carlisle, Bill Zwick, Ed Olson, Matt Eliason, Jim Howe Jr. and Jesse Perry.
Members of the Michigamme-Spurr Twp Volunteer Fire Department will act as Honorary Pallbearers.
