Ishpeming, MI- Joan J. Nelson, 84, life-long Ishpeming resident passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at her home while in the loving care of her family and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Joan was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on January 19, 1938, to the late Homer T. and Eva E. (Carlson) Hoiem. She graduated fromIshpeming High School, Class of 1956.

Joan worked as a store clerk at Morrisons Drug Store. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church of Ishpeming. Joan was an avid knitter and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Joan is survived by her husband Jim A. Nelson, whom she married on January 17, 1998, two daughters, Kathy (Mike) Hakala and Karen Skauge, her twin sister, Jane Maki, four grandchildren; Molli (Cory) Frion, Meghan Hakala, Mikayla Hakala, Jacob (Kylie Miller) Hakala, 2 great grandchildren; Hadley, and Ada, two step-daughters; Rene (Marc) Himes and Jacqueline (Percy) Dales, a step-son Bradley Nelson, 4 step grandchildren; Amy (Brandon) Boesl, Eric (Natalie) Dawe, Talia (Todd) Wunder, Braiden Nelson, several step great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Joan will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 26th at Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, MI with Rev. Steve Weston officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 AM until the time of service.

A luncheon will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

Pallbearer's will be Joan's grandchildren.

Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
