Ishpeming Twp.- James D. "Jim" Olson, age 68 of 1805 S. Rose St. Ishpeming passed away Tuesday November 17, 2015 at the UP Health System-Marquette where he had been a patient for 1 day.
Jim was born February 25, 1947 in Ishpeming to Donald & Helen (Bjork) Olson. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1965, and received his bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University in 1969. Jim began his teaching career at Romeo High School in Romeo Michigan he then went on to teach Industrial Arts for the Republic-Michigamme School District where he retired from in 2001. As a teacher Jim had summers off, but that is the time he put his carpentry skills to work building houses.
Jim was an avid golfer and hunter. He enjoyed time spent in the Helen Lake area where he would deer, bird & rabbit hunt. Jim and his family were lifelong members of the Wawonowin Golf Club. He first began golfing at the "old course" in Ishpeming and later at the current location, in which he help build. He served on the Board of Directors at Wawonowin and was a past club champion. Jim enjoyed watching his children and more recently watching grandchildren in their sporting events.
Jim is survived by his wife Gail (Poirier) Olson, whom he married on June 28, 1968, a son Dean (Megan) Olson of Ishpeming, a daughter Jamie (Brad) Brown of Appleton, WI, 5 grandchildren: Luke & Lexi Olson, Parker, Adison and Carter Brown, his father in law and mother in law Bill & Edna Poirier of Haines City, FL, brother in law Gary (Donna) Poirier of Ishpeming, and 2 nieces: Kelly Poirier and Sara Poirier. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Don & Helen Olson.
Funeral services for Jim will be held at 4:30pm on Thursday November 19, 2015 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Jim's family will greet friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2:00pm until the time of service at 4:30pm.
Pallbearers will be Jim's grandchildren.
A luncheon will be held at the Bethel Lutheran Church fellowship hall following the service.
Memorial considerations may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church or the Wawonowin Golf Club in Jim's memory.
