Obituary

Ishpeming – Jean S. Mathias, age 79 of 1108 N. Third St. Ishpeming passed away at 6:24am on Saturday August 9, 2008 at her home while under the care of her family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.


Jean was born May 25, 1929 in Salem, Indiana the daughter of the late Algot C. and Violet M. (Heavyside) Stam. Jean moved to Ishpeming with her family in her early childhood. Jean was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1947. She attended Cleary College of Business and then went on to Northern Michigan University, receiving her B.S. and Masters Degree in Elementary Education. Jean taught in the Gwinn School District at the MacDonald School for 25 years retiring in 1987. Following her retirement Jean substitute taught in the Ishpeming School District for several years.


Jean was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was active in many church activities and organizations. She was a life member of the Hematite Chapter #190 of the Order of the Eastern Star of which she was Past Matron. She was also Past Grand Marshall of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was Past Queen of the Nefretete Temple of the Daughters of the Nile. She was also a member of the Rebecah Lodge, and the Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International. She was a former member of the University Women, Ishpeming-Negaunee Chapter and the Wawonowin Country Club. Jean enjoyed mystery novels, crossword puzzles, bridge, painting, rosemalling, and gardening.


Jean is survived by her son – Bill (Kathy) Mathias of Ishpeming, 2 grandchildren – Jennifer and Eric Mathias both of Ishpeming along with many cousins.


The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00am until 11:00 am on Tuesday August 12, 2008 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming where the Order of the Eastern Star will hold a memorial service at 10:40am. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the fellowship hall.


Pallbearers will be Douglas Magnuson, Allen, Bill, Scott, Russell and Dennis Bjork and William Heavyside.


Memorials may be directed to the Wesley United Methodist Church of the Marquette Co. Humane Society in Jean's memory.
