Negaunee - James E. Rajala, age 71, of 712 Everett St. Negaunee and longtime resident of 14517 Old M-28, Covington, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020 while in the loving care of his family and U.P. Home Health and Hospice.
James was born in Covington on April 28, 1948, son of the late Vienna (Norback) and Alex Rajala. He spent most of his life in Covington, graduating from the L'Anse High School with the Class of 1966. Jim went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and upon his honorable discharge returned to Covington. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 33 years, starting at the Humboldt Mine then to the Republic Mine and retired from the Tilden Mine.
Jim was a lifetime member of the Henry Hendrickson VFW Post #8945 in Covington. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and his farming of beef cattle. In his younger years he participated in local bowling and pool leagues. Jim's greatest compassion was for his family whom he instilled the love of travel. Jim was honored to take the Honor Flight to Washington DC 3 years ago. He was a silver leader in the DAV, member of the NRA and loved country music.
Survivors include his best friend and wife Mary C. Rajala of Negaunee, three daughters - Hilary Richardson, of Negaunee; Lindsay (Ryan) Martinac of Ishpeming; Jennifer Rajala of Cody, WY; son Robert Rajala of Butte, MT; grandchildren - Tyler, Brooklyn, Rowen, Carsen, Haley, along with brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by numerous family members.
A memorial celebration of Jim's life will be held at the family home 14517 Old Hwy M-28, Covington, MI at 1:00PM on Saturday, July 18, 2020 where Military Honors will be accorded by the UP Honors Team. Interment will take place at the Covington Cemetery.
