Obituary

ISHPEMING, MI - “Let me tell you a story” about James “Jim” W. Laitinen, age 67, who passed away unexpectedly on Thursday March 19, 2026. Jim was born on March 5, 1959.

Jim spent much of his life doing what he loved most—working as an auto mechanic. He dedicated most of his career to the City of Ishpeming, where he was known for his skill, reliability, and willingness to help anyone in need. He took great pride in making sure every job was done right. Jim had a passion for anything with an engine—snow machines, motorcycles, cars, trucks, and just about anything else he could get his hands on. Whether he was in the garage or spending time with friends, Jim’s hands were rarely still, and almost never clean.

Beyond his work, Jim had a deep passion for racing, especially drag racing, he was an avid fan of NHRA. The sound of engines and the thrill of speed brought him joy throughout his life. He enjoyed darts, corn hole, cards, music, camping and fishing. Always ready to talk cars, the weather, fond memories from his past and anything else that could keep a conversation going.

Jim is survived by his son, Brian Laitinen of Neenah, WI; his daughter, Jenny (Casey) Diedrick of Greenville, WI; and his three grandsons, Dawson Laitinen and Liem Laitinen both of Neenah and Dylan Diedrick of Greenville, WI. He is also survived by his former wife and the mother of his children, Donna Niemi of Champion, MI; his sister, Maryann Schwanke of National Mine, MI; his brother-in-law, Dennis Laforest of Greenwood Loc; his nephews, Gage (Lorissa) Laitinen and Ethan Laitinen (fiancée Helena); as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sulo and Jeanette Latinen; sister, Carrie Laforest; and brother, Roger (Deni) Laitinen.

Jim will be remembered for his ability to make friends and conversations everywhere he went, his love of all things automotive, and his unique story telling. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jim’s family will be holding a Celebration of Life on Friday April 17th, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the event center at Jerzi’s 41 Sports Bar & Grill, 9965 US-41, Champion, Michigan. Hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Please bring your stories to share, as all who knew Jim knew his love for stories.
