Obituary

Ishpeming – Jack D. Anderson, age 94, lifetime Ishpeming resident, of 693 W. Division St., passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette surrounded by his loving family. Jack had been a resident of the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans for the past 2 years.

Jack was born December 7, 1919 in Ishpeming the son of the late Richard and Emma (Anderson) Anderson. He grew up in Ishpeming and was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1938. Jack served his country in the United States Army in the 40 th Combat Engineer Battalion from Aug. 21, 1942 thru Oct. 15, 1945. He served in Sicily Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe during World War II, receiving the Bronze Service Arrowhead. Following his service time he returned to this area and married the late Charlotte Maki. Together they moved to Milwaukee, WI where Jack worked as a baker until their return to Ishpeming in the late 1940's. Jack became a salesman for the Consolidated Lumber Co. in Ishpeming and later for the Neely Lumber Co. in Negaunee prior to working for Northland Builders on new home construction. Following his retirement, Jack, not one to sit still, became the maintenance man for Northland Apartments in Negaunee.

Jack was a longtime member of the Ishpeming Elks Club where he had served as treasurer. He enjoyed traveling around the country with his wife to his annual Army reunions. Jack was also an avid supporter of the Ishpeming Hematites!

Survivors include his daughter Jacklynn (Bruce) Heikkila of Marquette; a son Rich (Julie) Anderson of Ishpeming; 3 grandchildren – Sarah (Brett) Mills of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Eric Anderson of Grandville, MI, and Kylee (Joel) Pelland of Bartlett, IL; 2 great grandsons – Gavin and Mason Mills, along with a Pelland great grandchild expected in September; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Charlotte in 2003, 2 brothers Bill and Bob Anderson; 2 sisters Helen Phillips and Dorothy Piirto.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the Ishpeming Cemetery with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 will accord military honors.

The family would like to thank the staff at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans for their care of Jack over these past two years.
