Republic - Irene H. Voegtline, 99 yrs of age died peacefully at Eastwood Nursing Center, where she has resided since January of 2009, surrounded by her loving family on March 11, 2015.
Irene was born on August 17, 1915 in Diorite, Michigan to Martin and Delmrise (Gagnon) Gross, her parents later moved to Champion, Michigan. Irene graduated from Champion High School in 1933, she married Spalding Voegtline and lived in Republic, Michigan.
After her husbands death in 1951, she attended NMU and received her nursing degree as an LPN. She worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Marquette, she then got a job at the Roebal Nursing Center in Daggett, Michigan as a supervisor and later worked at the new facility in Stephenson, Michigan. She retired at 62 and spent several years in Mesa, AZ. She returned to Republic and lived at Riverview Heights. She loved to crochet and embroider, she loved playing scrabble and solitaire. She also loved to read. She loved visits from her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Surviving are three sons, Oliver (Mary Ann) Voegtline of Marquette, Carl Voegtline of Ishpeming, and James (Gisela) Voegtline of Mesa, Arizona. 11 grandchildren, Curtis (Vickie) Voegtline of Michigamme, Keith (Barbi) Voegtline of Bellvue, Nebraska, Judy (Jerry) Senske of Ishpeming, Scott Voegtline (Flor) of Pecos, TX, Carl Voegtline Jr. of Republic, Kathy (Jim) White of Mesa, AZ., Karen Voegtline of Mesa, AZ., Connie (Chuck) Quinn of Clovis, CA., Julie (Devon) Johnson of Madison, WI., James Voegtline Jr. of Apache Junction, AZ., Jennifer (Mike) Johnson of Apache Junction, AZ., Irene has 17 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren, with another soon to be born. Numerous nieces and nephews. Her dear friend and roommate at Eastwood, Ann Priante. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Spalding, and daughter in law Arlene Voegtline.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 – 11:00am on Friday, July 3, 2015 at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Republic, where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am with the Rev. Fr. Dan Moll to officiate. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Inurnment will take place at the Republic Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to the staff of the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee for the wonderful care Irene received while a resident there. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family requests donations be made to the Eastwood Nursing Center, Activity Fund in her memory.
