Obituary

Republic - Irene Tekla Arpiainen, age 88 of 174 Willow Dr. #19, Republic, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she was a resident for the past three days.

Irene was born September 23, 1921 in Diorite to the late Henry & Mayme (Johnson) Long. Growing up Irene lived in Diorite, married and moved to Humboldt and later moved to Republic. She worked as a seamstress at the H.W. Gossard Company in Ishpeming for several years.

Irene (Grama Arp) was an avid card player, enjoying smear, cribbage, and solitaire along with Yahtzee and Dice. In her younger years, she also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Irene was an excellent baker, and will especially be remembered for her cinnamon rolls. Irene was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Republic.

Irene is survived by a daughter Debbie (Bob) Bengtson, two sons Curt (Sherry) Kulju and Jeff (Stacey) Kulju all of Republic and a son-in-law Al Feifarek of Wisconsin. Grandchildren include: Nikki (Randy) Couveau, Michelle (Erik) Kulju, Teresa Kulju, Wanda (Jerome) Stankevich, Wendy (Dave) Wender, Doug (Debbie) Wickingson, Craig Wickingson, Lori (Keith) Greenawalt, Vicki (Mark) Ziegahn, Brenda Krause, Shelley (Steve) Progorzelski, Jack (Sylvia) Jensen; 17 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, to whom she was known as "Tati". Irene is also survived by numerous close friends, including her doctor, Wayne Carlson. We will all miss her dearly.

Irene was preceded in death by her previous husbands Herman Kulju and Carl Arpiainen, sister Pearl Koski, a son Duane Kulju, daughters Sharon Wickingson and Dolores Feifarek, special cousin Millie Peterson, grandchildren Melissa Kulju, Cory Wickingson, Jason Sirtola and Amber Kulju, along with sons-in-law Bob Wickingson and Jack Jensen.

Friends may call from 12:00 - 2:00 pm on Monday, March 1, 2010 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic where a memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Katherine Finegan officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Humboldt Twp. Cemetery in the spring.
